Newly Injured — The programs nobody tells you about

There are programs built specifically to help people with new spinal cord and brain injuries. Most people miss them simply because nobody tells them they exist. Apply as early as possible — many have waitlists, and getting on them early is the entire strategy.

⚠️ Start while you're still in the hospital. Ask your social worker or discharge planner to begin these applications before you leave inpatient rehab. Don't wait until you're home — waitlists are real, and early applications are everything.

Louisiana State Programs

Louisiana Department of Health

Traumatic Head Injury (THI) Program

Provides funding and services for people with traumatic brain injuries, including personal care, assistive technology, community support, and independent living skills. Funding is limited — apply early to get on the waitlist.

Louisiana Department of Health

Spinal Cord Injury Disability Trust Fund

Provides direct financial assistance to Louisiana residents with traumatic spinal cord injuries for disability-related expenses not covered elsewhere — adaptive equipment, home modifications, assistive technology, and medical costs. This is a grant, not a loan.

Medicaid Waiver Programs

Medicaid Waiver — Louisiana

NOW Waiver (New Opportunities Waiver)

Louisiana's primary Medicaid waiver for adults with developmental and physical disabilities. Covers personal care attendant (PCA) services — meaning you can hire someone you trust and pay them through the program. Also covers assistive technology, home modifications, and day programs.

A PCA can be hired through NOW, and in some cases a family member may qualify as the paid caregiver.

Medicaid Waiver — Louisiana

ROW Waiver (Residential Options Waiver)

Supports adults with disabilities who want to live in the community rather than a nursing facility. If a care team tells you a nursing home is your only option — ROW is the direct answer to that. Covers supported living, personal care, respite, and assistive technology to make living at home real.

Support Coordination — Your guide through the system

Highly Recommended

What is a Support Coordinator?

A support coordinator is a professional who works on your behalf to navigate the waiver system, identify what you qualify for, and help you actually get it — so you don't have to figure it all out alone.

Once you're enrolled in a Medicaid waiver program like NOW or ROW, you're assigned a support coordinator — or you can choose your own coordination company. This person becomes your advocate and guide inside the system. They meet with you regularly, help you identify services you qualify for, submit requests on your behalf, and follow up with providers and the state.

This is a genuinely valuable service that most newly injured people don't know exists. A good support coordinator can make the difference between sitting on a waitlist indefinitely and actually getting the equipment, care, and modifications you need.

Support coordination is covered 100% by the waiver — there is no cost to you.

  • Helps you navigate NOW and ROW waiver services from the start
  • Submits requests for assistive technology, medical devices, and supplies
  • Coordinates with providers, vendors, and the state on your behalf
  • Advocates for home modifications covered by the waiver
  • Keeps your plan of care updated as your needs change
  • Covered entirely by your Medicaid waiver — no out-of-pocket cost
